Delta Reduces Legacy Debt by ₦400bn, Targets Full Repayment by Q1 2027

The Delta State Government says it has reduced its legacy debt from ₦463 billion to ₦63 billion, representing a reduction of ₦400 billion, with plans to clear the outstanding balance by the first quarter of 2027.

The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedayen, disclosed this during the 2026 Budget Stakeholders Engagement in Asaba, where he presented the administration’s fiscal position and priorities for the 2027 budget. Ekedayen explained that the state currently allocates about 70 per cent of its expenditure to capital projects, while the remaining 30 per cent goes to recurrent expenditure.

He said the government intended to maintain the spending structure in the proposed 2027 budget, with priority given to road construction and critical infrastructure.

According to him, the focus on infrastructure is aimed at stimulating economic growth, improving connectivity and ensuring easier access to communities across the state.

Participants at the stakeholders’ engagement also called on residents to protect public facilities and maintain environmental cleanliness, stressing that responsible citizenship was necessary to preserve government investments.

They further commended the introduction of the 13th-month salary for Delta State public servants, describing the policy as a significant milestone in improving workers’ welfare.
