The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, marked a decade on the throne with a symbolic golf ceremony at the Benin Club Golf Section in Edo State, striking ten balls to represent ten years of his reign.
The event formed part of celebrations surrounding the monarch’s coronation anniversary and drew palace chiefs, business leaders, tournament sponsors and professional and amateur golfers.
Members of the royal family joined the ceremony, including Princess Amenaghawon and Princes Ikponmwosa, Igbinosa and Idugbowa, who also participated in the ceremonial tee off.
Chief organizer Prince Aghatise Erediauwa described the competition as a tribute to the monarch’s leadership and the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom. He said the 2026 gathering was the ninth edition of the anniversary golf series and marked its return after a previous edition in 2022.
Former Edo State Deputy Governor and National Institute for Sports Director General Philip Shaibu praised the monarch’s role as a symbol of unity and wished him continued success on the throne.
The anniversary tournament brought together sporting activity and royal tradition, with organizers presenting the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate cultural identity, community ties and the enduring significance of the Benin monarchy.
