ADC Demands Investigation of Alleged Attack on Sokoto Governorship Candidate

The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council has called for an urgent police investigation into an alleged attack on its Sokoto State governorship candidate, identified in the party’s account as Munir Dan Iya.

The council alleged that members of a state-backed security outfit known as the Sokoto Marshals confronted the candidate’s convoy along Airport Road as he returned to Sokoto after accompanying former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to the airport.

In a statement attributed to campaign spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan, the ADC said vehicles were damaged, including the candidate’s sport utility vehicle. It also alleged that personnel of the outfit had harassed motorists displaying opposition campaign materials at entrances to the city.

The campaign council made the more serious claim that two Department of State Services officers attached to the candidate had been taken away by members of the outfit. That allegation was not supported in the supplied account by confirmation from the DSS, police or state government.

Ologbondiyan said the candidate had reported the incident to the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police and urged the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies to identify those responsible and ensure the safety of political participants.

The council gave the authorities 24 hours to begin what it described as decisive action, warning that the party would pursue lawful measures to protect its members and their political rights.

These are allegations made by an interested political party. Before publication, Xposure News should seek police and DSS confirmation, the Sokoto State Government’s response and independent evidence of the reported damage and any missing personnel.
