Otti Says South East Governors Continue Quiet Engagements on Kanu’s Release

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said governors in the South East are continuing discussions with federal authorities over the fate of Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, while declining to disclose details of the engagements.

Otti made the remarks during a monthly media briefing in Umuahia, according to the account supplied to Xposure News. The report describes Kanu as serving a life sentence following a terrorism-related conviction; the precise current legal status and any appeal should be checked against court records.

The governor also presented figures showing a reduction in Abia State’s debt stock from ₦147.2 billion in the second quarter of 2023 to ₦48.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026, a decline of ₦98.6 billion. He said changes in foreign debt reflected drawdowns from previously arranged multilateral financing rather than new direct borrowing by his administration.

On infrastructure, Otti said the CKC water scheme in Aba was ready for commissioning and that additional smart school facilities were being developed. He also described road works in Aba and Umuahia as priorities because of their effects on transport, trade and employment.

The governor reported progress in land administration and housing, including the issuance of more than 5,000 Certificates of Occupancy and strong demand for a housing project in Umuahia. He also cited a favorable climate governance ranking for the state.

In healthcare, Otti said more than 31,000 eye screenings had been carried out and 1,811 patients had received operations, including cataract procedures for vulnerable residents. He urged the public to seek early assessment of eye problems.

He said Abia had taken precautionary steps following Nigeria’s imported Ebola case, including designating an isolation facility, while stressing that no Ebola infection had been confirmed in the state.

Addressing traders affected by proposed changes around Isi-Gate in Umuahia, Otti promised a gradual process with alternatives for displaced businesses. He also said a ₦1 billion gift he had announced for teachers was personal rather than a state-funded benefit and should be shared across ranks.

The debt figures, health service totals, personal gift and status of the Kanu discussions are attributed to the governor. They should be checked against official financial records, health data and relevant federal or judicial sources before publication.
