The House of Representatives has asked Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Joash Amupitan to appear before its Committee on Electoral Matters within seven legislative days and present a detailed assessment of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Lawmakers want information on continuous voter registration, production and distribution of permanent voter cards, election materials, staffing, security arrangements, funding and the readiness of technology including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal. The commission is also expected to explain how lessons from the recent Ekiti governorship election are being incorporated into nationwide planning.
The directive followed a motion associated with Minority Whip Mansur Manu Soro and Deputy Minority Leader Abdussamad Dasuki. Soro drew attention to reported registration difficulties, including equipment shortages, connectivity problems, insufficient staff and long queues, warning that these barriers could particularly affect first-time voters, rural communities and people with disabilities. The House requested a written report covering election logistics, hard-to-reach areas, risk assessments, approved allocations and outstanding funding. The oversight exercise is intended to identify gaps early enough for corrective action before the election timetable becomes more demanding.
