Akume Urges Respect for North–South Power Rotation Ahead of 2027

Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume has called on political leaders to preserve the informal North–South presidential power rotation arrangement, describing it as a means of promoting fairness and national cohesion.

Akume spoke in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba, led by Supreme Knight Steve Adehi. He recalled political consultations around the return to democratic government in 1999 and said alternating the presidency between the two broad regions had helped address concerns about exclusion.

He argued that the South should be allowed to complete its current cycle following the eight-year presidency of Muhammadu Buhari, expressing concern about northern presidential ambitions before that period ends.

The rotation arrangement is a political convention rather than a constitutional eligibility requirement, and Akume’s comments represent his view of how parties should approach the 2027 election.

He also urged closer cooperation among governments and praised the Knights for charitable programmes. Adehi described the organizations support for medical care, school renovations, boreholes and assistance to vulnerable people, calling for wider partnerships to address social needs.
