Akpabio Seeks Stronger Nigeria-UK Parliamentary Ties, Courts British Investors

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for deeper legislative cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, proposing expanded exchange programmes between the National Assembly and the British Parliament.

Akpabio made the call in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Vowles. He said the longstanding historical, diplomatic and economic relationship between both countries provided a strong basis for stronger parliamentary collaboration.

He noted that lawmakers from both countries had participated in periodic exchanges but argued that more structured engagement would help strengthen legislative institutions and improve capacity.

Akpabio also used the meeting to encourage British investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s oil, mining and other sectors. He said the government was working to improve the investment climate and make it easier for foreign investors to repatriate returns.

He described Nigeria as strategically important to Africa’s economic and security landscape and said stronger UK-Nigeria cooperation could support development across multiple sectors.

Vowles reaffirmed the British government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and said the United Kingdom would continue to partner with Nigeria’s National Assembly where support and cooperation were required.

The meeting reflected efforts by both countries to link diplomatic engagement with investment promotion and institutional cooperation.
