FG Confirms Ebola Case in Abuja, Launches Emergency Public Health Measures

The Federal Government has confirmed a case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), triggering an immediate public health response aimed at containing the virus and preventing further transmission.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the government disclosed that the case was laboratory-confirmed on October 20, 2026.

According to health authorities, the patient is a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria from Uganda on an international flight. She was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja, where she received treatment for several days before laboratory tests confirmed she had contracted the Ebola virus.

The patient is currently in isolation and receiving medical care.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), said it has activated containment measures and is working closely with the FCT Health Services Secretariat and other relevant agencies to prevent the spread of the disease.

As part of the response, contact tracing has commenced, with 44 close contacts already identified. Public health officials are monitoring individuals who may have been exposed to the patient, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel-related contacts.

Authorities also announced that disease surveillance has been intensified across the FCT, while the affected hospital is receiving support to strengthen infection prevention and control protocols.

The Federal Government urged both public and private healthcare facilities nationwide to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspected cases to public health authorities.

Healthcare workers were advised to maintain a high index of suspicion, promptly identify and isolate suspected patients, and strictly adhere to infection prevention and control measures.

The government reassured Nigerians that efforts are underway to contain the infection and protect public health, while urging citizens to cooperate with health authorities and follow official guidance as response activities continue.
