Two Dead as Petrol Tanker Fire Razes Buildings and Vehicles in Agbor, Delta State

One tanker driver dies in the inferno as the circumstances surrounding the death of another person remain unclear.

Tragedy struck Agbor, headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, on Sunday when a petrol tanker fire claimed two lives and destroyed buildings, vehicles and other property along the Old Lagos /Asaba Road.

The incident occurred around the Festy Pharmacy axis, opposite Orogodo Primary School, and reportedly involved two petroleum tankers. Preliminary accounts suggest that one of the vehicles suffered brake failure before a collision triggered the inferno. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing nearby commercial buildings, including Festy Pharmacy, and several vehicles parked around the affected area. Thick smoke billowed into the sky, causing panic among residents, traders and motorists who fled the vicinity.

The driver of one of the tankers died in the incident. Another person, reportedly some distance from the immediate scene, also lost their life. The circumstances surrounding that second death could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing, so it remains unclear whether it was directly connected to the tanker fire.

Sunday’s disaster has revived painful memories of the January 2025 petrol tanker explosion in Agbor, which claimed several lives and destroyed valuable property along the same road corridor. The recurrence has raised fresh concerns about the safety of petroleum transportation through densely populated commercial areas and the enforcement of roadworthiness standards. Residents and business owners are now counting their losses, while questions mount over the mechanical condition of petroleum tankers and the adequacy of preventive measures following earlier accidents.

The tragedy underscores the urgent need for the Federal Road Safety Corps, petroleum industry regulators and the Delta State Government to strengthen safety inspections, enforce transportation regulations and improve emergency response systems. As investigations continue, the authorities are expected to establish the precise cause of the accident and clarify the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
