Obi Urges FG to Declare National Emergency on Hunger

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to declare a national emergency on hunger, warning that Nigeria’s food crisis has worsened despite the country’s vast agricultural potential.

Obi made the appeal in a post on X to commemorate World Food Day, stressing that no Nigerian should go to bed hungry.

Citing recent hunger statistics, the former Anambra State governor said millions of Nigerians were facing severe food insecurity, describing the situation as alarming for a country endowed with extensive arable land.

He noted that a significant portion of Nigeria’s cultivable land remains unused, arguing that hunger, poverty and insecurity continue to affect millions of households across the country.

“On World Food Day, the message is clear: Nigerians deserve a country where no family goes to bed hungry, farmers can work without fear, and poverty and insecurity are confronted with urgency and compassion,” Obi said.

The former governor maintained that improving security and supporting farmers through grants, subsidies and other interventions would boost agricultural production and help tackle food shortages.

He also highlighted the contributions of rural women to food production, saying their role underscores the need for urgent action to address hunger and food insecurity nationwide.
