The National Orientation Agency has launched a grassroots public education campaign aimed at reducing voter apathy, vote buying and election-related violence before the 2027 general election.
Unveiled in Abuja, the initiative carries the theme ‘Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Future: Say No to Apathy, Vote Buying and Violence. Let’s Build a United Nigeria in 2027.’ It will be implemented through NOA structures in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris said elections should be understood as opportunities for citizens to influence governance. He warned that staying away from polling units, selling votes or participating in violence undermined the credibility of democratic choices.
NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu said the agency would use local languages, community meetings, radio, drama, town halls and digital platforms to reach urban and rural audiences. He said the campaign would also encourage Nigerians to check the accuracy of election-related information before circulating it.
The agency intends to work with traditional and community leaders, electoral bodies, security institutions and civil society to explain voting responsibilities and discourage inducements and intimidation.
Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Joash Ojo Amupitan, who attended the launch, reiterated the commission’s stated commitment to a free, fair, transparent and inclusive election. He said effective preparation and cooperation among stakeholders were necessary to achieve that objective.
The campaign’s goals include helping eligible voters understand the consequences of vote buying and electoral violence while promoting tolerance of differing political views.
The initiative represents an early civic mobilization effort. Its impact will depend on sustained outreach, public trust and whether voters see corresponding improvements in election administration and security.
