Portuguese FA Suspends Ronaldo, Opens Disciplinary Probe Over National Team Camp Exit

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has opened disciplinary proceedings against national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo following his departure from Portugal’s camp during the recent international break, just 24 hours before the country’s match against Denmark.

In a statement reported by Portuguese newspaper A Bola on Saturday, the federation disclosed that its disciplinary council had also imposed an additional provisional suspension on the Al-Nassr forward and classified the case as urgent.

According to the FPF, the decision followed deliberations by its non-professional section on Friday and seeks to determine whether any disciplinary violations were committed in connection with events that occurred on Wednesday.

The federation revealed that Ronaldo had already been under an automatic provisional suspension before the formal disciplinary proceedings commenced. It subsequently imposed an additional precautionary suspension on a non-automatic basis while referring the matter to its disciplinary investigation committee.

The FPF stated that details of the investigation would remain confidential until the conclusion of the proceedings.

Ronaldo’s exit from the national team camp has generated widespread debate, amid reports of a disagreement between the five-time Ballon d’Or winner and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus.

Despite the controversy, Portugal’s official national team social media accounts on Friday celebrated Ronaldo’s goal for Al-Nassr in their Saudi Pro League victory over Al-Diriyah.

The outcome of the investigation could have implications for Ronaldo’s future involvement with the Portuguese national team.
