Israeli Specialists Train Enugu Clinicians in Emergency Maternal Care

Nigerian doctors, midwives and other healthcare workers have completed specialised training in the management of serious childbirth complications through a programme supported by the Embassy of Israel.

The five day course took place at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, from October 5 to 9, 2026, under the guidance of Israeli medical specialist Professor Offer Erez. Sessions addressed postpartum haemorrhage, blood transfusion procedures, emergency stabilisation and coordinated clinical response.

The programme combined classroom instruction with practical simulations and a training of trainers model intended to help participants share skills with colleagues at other facilities.

Israel’s Chargé d’Affaires in Nigeria, Racheli Stavissky, said the partnership aimed to strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent avoidable maternal deaths. Enugu Governor Peter Mbah welcomed the training and expressed interest in further cooperation on medical education and healthcare delivery.

The embassy cited a World Health Organisation estimate of about 75,000 maternal deaths annually in Nigeria. That figure should be checked against the latest WHO estimates and their reference year before publication.
