ABUJA — African Democratic Congress vice presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has told women in the party that the battle for political power in 2027 will ultimately be decided at the community level rather than at political rallies in Abuja.
Speaking at the ADC National Women League Conference at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Amaechi said women would be crucial to the party’s attempt to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He estimated that as much as 90 per cent of the mobilization required to defeat the APC could depend on women.
Amaechi recalled the strategy used during the political campaign that brought the APC to power, saying women were deliberately mobilized across states and communities.
The ADC, he argued, must build a similar grassroots structure extending to wards and polling units.
He linked the opposition campaign to the economic pressure facing Nigerian families, including food prices, school fees and unemployment.
Amaechi also made claims concerning the number of children outside school and Nigeria’s literacy situation as he criticized the administration’s record.
Titi Atiku Abubakar, wife of ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, urged women to resist attempts to influence their votes with food or money.
She argued that temporary financial assistance could not compensate for longer term economic hardship.
ADC Presidential Campaign Management Committee Director General Austin Akobundu said women and young people would occupy central positions in the party’s grassroots campaign.
The party intends to extend its mobilization structure through local governments, wards and polling units as the presidential contest approaches.
