Nollywood Sets Guinness World Record as 51,000 Attend ‘Black Market’ Screening in Lagos

Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, has achieved a major milestone after setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a single-location film screening, with 51,000 people watching Black Market at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos.

The historic event, held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, surpassed the previous record of 43,624 attendees set in 2015, further cementing Nollywood’s growing influence on the global entertainment stage.

According to organisers, Guinness World Records officially confirmed that all 51,000 attendees qualified for the record after remaining at the venue from the beginning of the screening until the film’s conclusion.

Black Market, produced by Nora Awolowo and directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, became the first Nollywood production to achieve the feat, marking a landmark moment for Nigeria’s creative industry.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Scarlet Gomez and Susan Pwajok, whose performances have drawn praise from audiences and industry stakeholders.

Thousands of movie lovers converged on the iconic Lagos venue for the record-breaking screening, demonstrating the popularity of Nigerian cinema and the increasing support for locally produced films.

Industry observers say the achievement reflects Nollywood’s continued rise on the international scene, where Nigerian filmmakers are gaining wider recognition through blockbuster productions, streaming platforms and expanding global audiences.

The cast and crew of Black Market have been widely commended for delivering a production that not only entertained audiences but also secured a place for Nollywood in the Guinness World Records.

The landmark screening is being celebrated as another significant achievement for Nigeria’s creative sector, reinforcing Nollywood’s status as one of the world’s largest and most influential film industries.
