The United Kingdom has awarded Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 68 Nigerians for postgraduate studies in British universities during the 2026 academic session.
Twelve beneficiaries received Chevening awards, while 56 had been selected for Commonwealth scholarships, according to information released at pre-departure ceremonies in Abuja and Lagos.
British High Commission Chargée d’Affaires Vicky Seymour described the awards as an investment in both the individual scholars and Nigeria’s long-term development.
She urged beneficiaries to use the academic exposure, professional networks and international experience gained in the UK to contribute to Nigeria after completing their programmes.
Among the recipients is Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex under the Chevening programme.
Another beneficiary, Abubakar Umar, who has a hearing impairment, will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter under a Commonwealth Scholarship.
The scholarship schemes are designed for applicants with strong academic records, leadership potential and a demonstrated commitment to development in their home countries.
The UK government said more than 5,237 Nigerians had participated in Chevening and Commonwealth programmes over the years.
Many alumni have gone on to work in government, business, academia, civil society and other sectors.
Applications for the 2027–2028 scholarship cycle have also opened, creating another opportunity for Nigerians seeking postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.
