APC, PDP Candidates File Petitions Challenging Adeleke’s Osun Victory

The Osun governorship election tribunal has displayed two petitions challenging the 15 August result, superseding an earlier report that no petition was filed before the deadline.

OSOGBO: Candidates of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have filed separate petitions challenging the declaration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as winner of the 15 August 2026 Osun State governorship election.

Notices of the petitions were displayed at the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal secretariat in Osogbo on Monday, 7 September. Tribunal Secretary Pefe Belemore confirmed that petitions challenging the election outcome had been filed and said the necessary notices would be placed on the tribunal’s noticeboard before noon.

The APC petition, numbered EPT/OS/GOV/01/2026, was filed by the party’s candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji. The respondents listed in the notice are Adeleke, the Accord Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A second petition, numbered EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026, was filed by PDP candidate Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola against Adeleke, INEC and the Accord Party.

The grounds advanced by the petitioners and the remedies they are asking the tribunal to grant have not been established, as complete copies of the petitions were not publicly available when this report was prepared.

INEC declared Adeleke, who contested on the Accord Party platform, the winner with 511,067 votes. Oyebamiji finished second with 444,815 votes. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress placed third with 17,180 votes. Fifteen parties fielded candidates in the election.

An earlier account, now superseded

The display of the petitions supersedes an earlier report that no challenge had been lodged before the statutory deadline. That account relied on an unnamed tribunal employee who told reporters visiting the registry on Saturday, 5 September, the final day of the filing window, which ran for 21 days, that nothing had been received, and was not supported by a formal registry record.

The petition numbers, the notices displayed at the secretariat, and named confirmation from the tribunal secretary now establish that two challenges were filed. Displaying the notices does not determine the validity of either petition or the merits of the allegations they may contain, and it does not overturn the election result.

What happens next

The next procedural stages are expected to include service of the court processes, responses from the named parties, and the announcement of a hearing timetable.

Adeleke remains governor, and the declared election result remains effective unless altered by a competent tribunal or appellate court.
