Former PDP South-South Vice Chairman, Dan Orbih, Dies at 64

Chief Dan Osi Orbih, a former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the South-South zone and former chairman of the party in Edo State, has died at the age of 64.

Orbih died on Monday, August 31, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family and signed by Francis Udukhomoi Orbih. The family announced his passing with profound sadness, describing him as a beloved husband, father, brother and uncle. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Born on October 27, 1961, in Ogbona, Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, Orbih grew to become one of the most influential and recognizable political figures in Edo State and the wider South-South region.

He served as chairman of the PDP’s Edo State chapter from 2011 to 2020. Over his nine-year tenure, he earned a reputation as a determined political organizer, an outspoken opposition leader, and a fierce defender of the party.

He later rose to become the PDP’s National Vice Chairman for the South-South, extending his influence beyond Edo State and playing prominent roles in party mobilization, electoral strategy, and negotiations among political leaders across the region.

Known for his strong convictions and uncompromising approach, Orbih remained an important voice in debates on internal democracy, party discipline and the future of opposition politics in Nigeria. His career was marked by major electoral contests and internal party struggles — whether backing allies or confronting opponents, he was rarely a silent participant, staying deeply involved in PDP affairs for decades.

Tributes pour in

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, described Orbih as a true friend and committed political ally, saying his death marked the fall of one of the biggest trees in Edo State’s political forest. Wike added that Orbih would be remembered as a great politician, a dependable associate, and a man of faith who stayed loyal to his friends and convictions.

Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki also mourned Orbih’s death, calling him a prominent Edo son whose contributions to politics and public affairs left an enduring mark on the state and the nation. Obaseki noted that Orbih’s leadership roles within the PDP allowed him to contribute significantly to the party’s growth and to Nigeria’s democratic development.

Orbih’s death closes a political journey defined by courage, loyalty, resilience, and an extraordinary capacity for mobilization. Supporters regarded him as a strategist who devoted much of his life to strengthening political structures, while even his opponents acknowledged his determination and lasting influence.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs Florence Orbih; his children, Winifred Anwosiobor Orbih and Dr Mildred Omonemi Orbih; and his brothers, sisters and other members of his extended family.

The family has appealed to relatives, friends and well-wishers to keep them in their prayers during this period of mourning.
