Szoboszlai’s Late Penalty Earns Liverpool Dramatic Draw at Newcastle

Liverpool rescued a point in dramatic fashion as Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in their opening Premier League fixture at St James’ Park.

The hosts made a flying start and took the lead just five minutes into the contest. Anthony Elanga capitalised on a swift counter-attack to beat the Liverpool defence and give Newcastle an early advantage.

Liverpool struggled to find a breakthrough in the first half but emerged from the interval with renewed purpose. Their pressure paid off in the 55th minute when Cody Gakpo found the back of the net to level proceedings.

However, Newcastle responded almost immediately, restoring their lead just two minutes later through Joe Willock, whose finish reignited the home crowd and put the Magpies on course for all three points.

The visitors continued to push forward in search of another equaliser, creating sustained pressure as the match moved into added time. Their persistence was rewarded when Lewis Hall fouled Victor Muñoz inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to point to the spot.

With the clock deep into stoppage time, Szoboszlai held his nerve and calmly slotted home the penalty in the ninth minute of added time, denying Newcastle a victory that had appeared within reach.

The result ensured Liverpool began their campaign with a valuable away point, while Newcastle were left to rue missed opportunities after coming agonisingly close to securing all three points in a pulsating encounter.
