FEC Approves More Than N610bn Highway Projects and 600 Homes for Armed Forces

The Federal Executive Council has approved contracts and public private partnership concessions valued at more than N610 billion for road projects across Nigeria.

The council also approved the direct purchase of 600 four bedroom terrace duplexes in Abuja for members of the Armed Forces.

Minister of State for Works Bello Goronyo said the road approvals covered reconstruction, rehabilitation, upgrading and private sector concessions for major federal highways.

Among the approved contracts is the reconstruction of the Ado Ekiti Iyin Aramoko Itawure Osun State border road at a cost of about N159.826 billion.

The project has a planned completion period of two years.

FEC also ratified a N54.118 billion variation connected with another rehabilitation project following changes in scope and cost.

The government said the road programme was intended to improve interstate connectivity, reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs and support movement of agricultural and manufactured goods.

Some highway projects will be delivered through public private partnerships to reduce pressure on public finances.

Under the concession model, private investors will finance, develop, operate and maintain designated roads under agreed terms while ownership remains with the Federal Government.

The Ministry of Works said it would supervise construction and monitor compliance with approved specifications and timelines.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Muttaqha Rabe Darma said FEC also approved the purchase of 600 housing units at Bristol City Development in Life Camp, Abuja.

The houses will be allocated to Armed Forces personnel as part of a wider military welfare programme.

Government had previously approved 1,556 housing units for military personnel in the Deidei area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The latest approval brings the number of units approved under the programme to 2,156.

The administration’s longer term target is to provide 10,000 housing units for members of the Armed Forces.

Officials said housing was being treated as an important component of military welfare and conditions of service.
