Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the re-election of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, as a major political victory achieved against overwhelming opposition.
Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home in Osun State following the governor’s victory in the August 15 governorship election.
The singer congratulated his uncle on securing a second term, describing the election as more than a battle because of the number of political figures he claimed had rallied against the incumbent.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.
He attributed Adeleke’s victory largely to the support of Osun voters, whom he praised for standing by the governor and protecting their votes during the election.
According to Davido, the level of support for the Adeleke family was overwhelming, saying he became emotional several times while witnessing events on election day.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.
Davido said the outcome of the election should serve as a lesson to political leaders across the country, arguing that governors who genuinely serve their people would enjoy their support at the polls.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
The singer also thanked Osun voters for supporting Adeleke and his family despite what he described as attempts at intimidation and vote-buying during the election.
Davido unveils sports development plans
Beyond the election, Davido announced plans to increase his involvement in youth and sports development in Osun State.
As chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, he said he deliberately postponed some initiatives until after the governorship election.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
One of the initiatives under consideration, according to the singer, is the development of a recreation centre for young people featuring football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.
Davido said the proposed facility would provide young people with opportunities to discover and develop their sporting talents while promoting healthy recreation.
The singer has remained one of Adeleke’s most prominent celebrity supporters and was actively involved in the governor’s campaign ahead of the election.
Adeleke secured a second term after defeating his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the August 15 poll.
With the election concluded, Davido said his attention would now shift towards initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for young people in Osun State, particularly through sports and recreation.
