Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo has asked the International Air Transport Association to review the three letter code assigned to Osubi Airport in Delta State.
The airport currently uses the IATA code QRW.
Keyamo said the code was more closely associated with the wider Warri area and did not adequately reflect the airport’s official name and physical location in Osubi.
The airport’s four letter International Civil Aviation Organisation code remains DNSU.
In a formal request to IATA, the minister asked for consideration of a new code that bears a clearer relationship to Osubi.
Possible combinations suggested for consideration include OSU, OSB, SUB and QSB, subject to IATA rules and availability.
Keyamo said a clearer designation could reduce ambiguity for passengers and improve consistency across ticketing, baggage handling, travel systems and aviation records.
The minister has also directed airlines operating at the airport to ensure passenger documents describe the facility correctly as Osubi Airport, Delta State.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency and other aviation institutions were instructed to use the proper geographical designation in their systems and publications.
Government said the clarification was not intended to diminish the airport’s role in serving the Warri metropolitan area.
Keyamo maintained that Osubi and Warri were distinct locations and said official aviation information should reflect that distinction accurately.
The final decision on any new three letter code will remain with IATA under its established allocation procedures.
