Amnesty International Nigeria has called for an urgent investigation into remarks attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi ahead of the Osun governorship election.
The organisation said allegations that the senator used language capable of encouraging violence should be examined promptly and impartially.
Amnesty said political disagreements should never be allowed to become justification for physical attacks.
It urged relevant authorities to investigate the disputed remarks and hold anyone responsible if evidence established that a criminal offence had been committed.
The controversy centres on a viral video in which Fadahunsi was accused of using the word killing while addressing supporters.
The Osun East senator has denied calling for physical attacks.
He said the recording was edited and that his words were meant figuratively as a call for voters to defeat the Accord Party at the ballot box.
Amnesty Nigeria Country Director Isa Sanusi said the organisation intended to use the case to highlight the wider danger of inflammatory political rhetoric.
He said political leaders must be accountable for statements that could encourage electoral violence.
The organisation also said it could use its international network to draw attention to politicians it believed were promoting violence.
The dispute has intensified broader concerns about political language and public safety during election campaigns.
Amnesty said stronger accountability would be necessary to discourage dangerous rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general election.
