Katsina Tightens Treasury Single Account Controls to Curb Financial Leakages

The Katsina State Government has begun another phase of reforms aimed at closing financial leakages and strengthening implementation of the Treasury Single Account.

Finance Commissioner Bello Hussaini Kagara said the state wanted to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in the management of public funds.

He spoke during a capacity building workshop for accountants and officers involved in initiating government payments.

The training focused on payment processes, internal controls, appropriations and the handling of payment vouchers.

Kagara said previous assessments had identified cases in which funds were transferred into accounts that were not intended to receive them.

He warned that such weaknesses could undermine the objectives of the Treasury Single Account if they were not corrected.

Participants were asked to identify practical problems affecting the system and propose improvements.

The commissioner said financial officers had a responsibility to maintain strong ethical standards and follow established procedures.

He also stressed the importance of continuous training because public financial management systems were constantly evolving.

Kagara said the state did not expect a perfect system but wanted one that was efficient, transparent and capable of protecting public resources.

The government promised to review recommendations from the workshop and incorporate workable proposals into future reforms.
