Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has signed a new electricity law designed to strengthen regulation, investment and service delivery in the state’s power sector.
The Ondo State Electric Power Sector Amendment Law 2026 updates the state’s previous legislation and aligns it with the Electricity Act 2023.
A major provision of the law is the creation of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission as an independent body responsible for overseeing electricity activities within Ondo.
The commission will regulate tariffs, licensing, open access, private investment, mini grids, renewable energy and other areas of the state electricity market.
The law also creates a State Independent System Operator and State Market Operator to support the development and operation of the electricity market.
Compulsory metering is required in both grid connected and off grid areas, while consumers will maintain direct service and payment relationships with electricity providers.
The legislation also protects transformers, distribution lines and other electricity infrastructure financed by communities, associations and private individuals.
Deliberate obstruction of certified electricity infrastructure has been made an offence, with financial penalties provided for violations.
A new Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency will inspect and certify installations and license qualified technicians and contractors.
The Ondo State Power Company has also been given expanded authority to invest in generation, transmission, distribution, mini grids, renewables and other energy projects.
State officials said the legislation would help attract private capital, protect electricity investments and allow Ondo to take greater advantage of the decentralisation of Nigeria’s power market.
