The management of Enugu International Hospital says the new 300 bed facility is being positioned to reduce the number of Nigerians travelling abroad for specialist medical treatment.
Chief Executive Sam Agwu said the hospital was nearing completion and had already received advanced equipment for several specialised services.
He said the project reflected Governor Peter Mbah’s plan to reduce capital flight associated with medical tourism.
The hospital is expected to provide oncology, cardiology, kidney care, orthopaedic services, neuroscience and advanced diagnostic treatment.
Agwu said management hoped to reduce outbound medical travel significantly within the first year of operation by providing services comparable with those available overseas.
The facility will include specialised cancer treatment, cardiac and vascular services and open heart surgery.
A cardiothoracic surgeon from the United Kingdom is expected to serve in a senior clinical role and contribute to training Nigerian specialists.
The hospital also plans to provide nuclear medicine using positron emission tomography technology and on site production of radioactive materials needed for some diagnostic procedures.
Other equipment includes CT scanners, MRI machines and mammography systems.
The facility will also provide renal and neurological care.
Management said its long term ambition was not only to retain Nigerian patients but eventually attract patients from other countries by offering advanced care at competitive costs.
The hospital said patients would receive specialist treatment supported by modern technology and a focus on dignity and compassionate care.
