Peoples Redemption Party presidential candidate Donald Duke has called for a broad overhaul of Nigeria’s financial and economic system, arguing that high borrowing costs and rising public debt are limiting growth.
The former Cross River State governor said businesses could not expand sustainably when interest rates remained at exceptionally high levels.
He advocated a financial system that provides more affordable credit to productive sectors.
Duke also called for greater fiscal discipline and a shift in government spending toward electricity, healthcare, education and the judiciary.
He said reliable energy was one of the most important conditions for stronger productivity and investment.
The presidential candidate argued that economic reform should also include a more efficient tax system and a justice system capable of resolving disputes quickly and credibly.
He said Nigeria had significant energy resources but needed better management to translate those resources into lower production costs.
On governance, Duke said critical appointments should be based on competence and integrity rather than political loyalty.
He argued that political competition should end after elections and that governments should recruit the strongest available people to manage public institutions.
Duke said monetary policy alone could not resolve the country’s challenges.
He called for coordinated action involving affordable finance, reliable power, disciplined public spending and stronger institutions.
According to him, those measures could help move Nigeria toward an economy driven by investment, enterprise and sustainable productivity.
