Lagos State says preparations are progressing for the inaugural National Intermediate Sports Festival scheduled to run from October 1 to October 15.
Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu gave the assurance while inspecting rehabilitation work at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.
The state expects between 14,000 and 15,000 athletes to participate, with competitions spread across Teslim Balogun Stadium, Rowe Park and other sporting facilities.
Sanwo Olu inspected the main football and athletics arena, indoor sports hall, volleyball court and swimming pool.
He said the renovation was part of a wider sports infrastructure programme that had been under way for about three years across Surulere, Ifako, Bariga, Ikorodu, Epe, Agege and Badagry.
At Teslim Balogun Stadium, the main pitch is being upgraded to meet international football standards and natural grass has already been installed.
Work on the athletics track and swimming facilities is expected to be completed before the event.
The governor said hosting the first National Intermediate Sports Festival would strengthen grassroots sports and create a pathway for young athletes to develop before moving into elite competition.
He said Lagos accepted the hosting rights after the National Sports Commission selected the state for the maiden edition.
Sanwo Olu expressed confidence that the venues would be ready on schedule and said the event would also help showcase upgraded sports infrastructure across the state.
