FCCPC Lagos Resolves More Than 15,000 Consumer Complaints

The Lagos Zonal Office of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says it has successfully resolved more than 15,000 complaints from consumers seeking redress over unsatisfactory goods and services.

Zonal Coordinator Olubunmi Otti disclosed that the office had received about 17,000 complaints through its online platform and physical office in Lagos.

She said consumers were entitled to receive fair value for money and should not remain silent when products or services failed to meet reasonable expectations.

According to Otti, consumers should first approach the seller or service provider to seek a resolution. Where that effort fails, they may submit a formal complaint to the Commission.

She advised complainants to provide adequate documentation, including receipts, the address of the business involved, the value of the transaction and the specific remedy being requested.

The Commission handles complaints involving refusal of refunds, misleading prices, hidden charges, poor labelling, substandard goods and other unfair commercial practices.

Otti also reminded businesses that products sold in Nigeria should carry information in English to enable consumers to understand what they are buying.

The Lagos office uses direct engagement, negotiation, mediation, conciliation and administrative hearings to settle disputes.

The FCCPC operates under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018, which empowers it to protect consumers and address unfair competition, market abuse, price fixing, bid rigging and other practices capable of harming the public.

Otti urged Nigerians to make greater use of the Commission’s complaint channels whenever they believe their consumer rights have been violated.
