The Nigeria Customs Service has received the Commonwealth Environment and Corporate Social Responsibility Gold Award for its Customs Cares community development programme.

The award, presented in Glasgow, recognised the service’s Hub and Spoke Community Activation Model and its work in education, healthcare, food security, clean water and environmental sustainability.

Deputy Comptroller General Timi Bomodi, who received the honour on behalf of Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, said the recognition affirmed the responsibility of public institutions to improve lives beyond their statutory duties.

The service said Customs Cares had reached more than 10 million Nigerians in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory through school renovations, health interventions, boreholes, food support and the Green Borders Initiative.

Customs officials said the award would encourage the service to deepen its community focused work while continuing its responsibilities in revenue collection, trade facilitation and border security.
