The Bauchi State Government and the United Nations Children’s Fund have launched activities for the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, focusing on stronger support systems for mothers and improved infant nutrition.

UNICEF said more than 90 per cent of mothers in the state breastfeed, but only 26 per cent practise exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and just 12 per cent begin within the first hour after delivery.

UNICEF Bauchi Field Office Chief Nuzhat Rafique said colostrum provides vital early protection and warned against giving newborns water, honey or other substances. She promoted the Zero Water campaign, noting that breast milk provides adequate nutrition and hydration during the first six months.

Rafique welcomed the state’s approval of six months paid maternity leave for public servants and its N500 million counterpart allocation to the Child Nutrition Fund. She also called for nursing spaces, family support and better public education.

Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board Executive Chairman Rilwanu Mohammed said exclusive breastfeeding reduces malnutrition and infections while supporting healthy growth, immunity and brain development. Mothers were encouraged to continue breastfeeding with complementary foods until children are at least two years old.
