Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has said recent comments by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, a member of the ruling APC, validate long standing opposition concerns about fiscal mismanagement and its connection to Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis.
In a statement from his aide Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said Monguno’s questions about budget implementation, withheld capital allocations for security agencies and irregular distribution of federally generated revenue echo criticisms the opposition has raised for months. He argued that if security agencies have indeed been denied funds appropriated for equipment and operations, the government bears responsibility for the resulting violence, and called for every attack to prompt scrutiny of whether security forces were properly resourced to prevent it.
