The Lagos State Government has advised motorists to expect traffic delays on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as repair works on the Kara Bridge begin on Tuesday, July 28.
According to the government, the Federal Ministry of Works will commence the replacement of the bridge’s expansion joint, with the maintenance project expected to last for two weeks.
As part of the rehabilitation, the four-lane carriageway will be reduced to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the bridge. The temporary lane reduction is expected to cause slower traffic flow, particularly around the Kara axis.
The government also warned that congestion may build up around the Fatgbems Turn as some motorists attempt to use alternative routes or make U-turns to avoid the affected section.
However, officials noted that traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn is expected to experience minimal disruption.
Motorists have been urged to plan their journeys in advance, consider alternative routes where possible, obey traffic management signs, and cooperate with traffic officials deployed to ease movement during the construction period.
The state government said the rehabilitation project is necessary to improve the safety, structural integrity, and long-term durability of the Kara Bridge, while appealing to commuters for patience and understanding throughout the two-week repair exercise.
