Oando Energy Resources has met with Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe to discuss the company’s role in advancing Nigeria’s gas to power strategy, highlighting the contribution of its 480 megawatt Okpai plant, which the company says supplies about 15 percent of the country’s total electricity.

Speaking at the meeting, Oando Energy Resources Managing Director Ainojie Irune outlined the scale of the company’s gas assets, noting that the Okpai plant, which reaches an estimated 50 million Nigerians, has a strong operational track record built over decades. He said the company’s broader portfolio is increasingly weighted toward gas, describing domestic gas capacity as essential to Nigeria’s economic recovery and industrial future, and detailed work through the company’s clean energy division exploring how gas, solar, wind and hydro resources can be blended to expand power access, including a pilot project repurposing abandoned oil wells to generate geothermal style power.

Irune said Nigeria’s energy transformation cannot rest on any single stakeholder, calling for a shared long term commitment between government and industry. Tegbe welcomed the engagement, describing the discussion as a valuable opportunity to align government policy with private sector capacity, and said the ministry remains focused on strengthening gas to power delivery as a cornerstone of the country’s industrialization agenda, with both sides agreeing to continue collaboration in the weeks ahead, including potential technical and advisory support from Oando.
