Police Arrest Four Officers Over Viral ‘Ethnic Comment’ to Motorist

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four police officers captured in a viral video allegedly making ethnically insensitive remarks to a motorist during a roadside stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The command said the officers were taken into custody following widespread public outrage over the incident, which has drawn criticism on social media.

In the viral footage, one of the officers was seen allegedly soliciting a bribe from the motorist. After the driver reportedly refused to make any payment, the officer made comments widely condemned as ethnically offensive.

Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Police Command described the officers’ conduct as unprofessional and ethnically insensitive, stressing that it fell short of the standards expected of members of the Nigeria Police Force.

The command said disciplinary procedures had commenced, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

It reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, ethical conduct and respect for the rights and dignity of all citizens, assuring the public that any officer found guilty of misconduct would be dealt with in accordance with the law and established disciplinary procedures.

The police also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and continue reporting cases of misconduct by security personnel through appropriate channels.
