Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has launched the Atlas Network, a continental artificial intelligence (AI) initiative aimed at accelerating the development of African large language models (LLMs) and strengthening collaboration among African countries on emerging digital technologies.
Tijani unveiled the initiative on Monday during the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries held in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the minister called on African nations to work together in shaping the continent’s digital future, stressing that collaboration is essential to ensuring Africa develops AI technologies that reflect its languages, cultures and unique socio-economic realities.
He said the Atlas Network would serve as a platform for advancing indigenous AI innovation, supporting the development of African large language models, and promoting the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence across the continent.
The launch formed part of broader discussions at the conference, where African telecommunications leaders emphasized the need for a unified continental approach to digital transformation and technology governance.
Participants also called for a common African position ahead of the 2026 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, with the aim of strengthening the continent’s influence in shaping global telecommunications and digital policy.
The conference brought together policymakers, regulators and industry stakeholders to discuss strategies for expanding digital infrastructure, promoting innovation and enhancing regional cooperation in Africa’s rapidly evolving technology sector.
