Andy Burnham has officially become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after King Charles III invited him to form a new government at Buckingham Palace, ushering in a new administration following the resignation of Keir Starmer.

Burnham, who recently emerged as leader of the Labour Party, is expected to travel to 10 Downing Street to deliver his first address to the nation as prime minister and outline the priorities of his government.

His appointment comes after Starmer formally resigned as prime minister, bringing his tenure to an end with a farewell speech outside Downing Street.

Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country.

“I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” he said.

Burnham, who became Labour leader on Friday, is expected to unveil key policy priorities in the coming days, with reports indicating that his administration may consider reducing income tax as part of its economic agenda.

The new prime minister is also set to begin assembling his government, with a cabinet reshuffle expected later on Monday that will include the appointment of new ministers and the replacement of others.

Ahead of the anticipated cabinet changes, Prisons Minister Lord Timpson announced his resignation on Monday morning, becoming the first minister to leave office as Burnham prepares to form his administration.

Burnham’s assumption of office marks the beginning of a new chapter in British politics as he takes charge of a government facing economic, social and political challenges.
