At least 11 people have been killed and 46 others injured after Russian forces launched another wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the second deadly assault on the city within a week.
According to Kyiv’s military administration, the overnight attacks left dozens of civilians wounded, including five children, while three additional fatalities were reported in the surrounding Kyiv region.
The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said emergency responders were carrying out rescue operations at more than 20 locations across the capital after residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were hit.
He disclosed that several high-rise apartment buildings sustained heavy damage in two districts, with search teams continuing efforts to locate residents trapped beneath the rubble.
The latest bombardment came on the eve of the NATO summit in Turkey, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet with Donald Trump for talks focused on the ongoing war and Western military support for Ukraine.
Hours before the strikes, Zelensky had warned that intelligence reports suggested Russia was preparing another large-scale attack on Kyiv following last week’s bombardment that claimed at least 30 lives.
Residents across the capital spent another night sheltering in underground metro stations as air raid sirens sounded and Ukraine’s air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles and drones.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said ballistic missiles struck several parts of the city, igniting fires in residential complexes while also damaging warehouses and a garage facility.
By Monday morning, extensive destruction was visible across Kyiv, with at least three residential buildings partially collapsing after sustaining direct missile impacts.
Emergency workers continued rescue operations while helicopters were deployed to transport water from nearby rivers to help firefighters contain multiple blazes across the city.
Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, allegations Moscow denies, insisting its strikes are directed at military installations and energy facilities in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks inside Russian territory.
Ahead of the NATO summit, Zelensky renewed his appeal to Ukraine’s allies to accelerate the delivery of advanced air defence systems capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
In a post on social media, the Ukrainian president warned that delays in supplying air defence missiles were costing civilian lives and encouraging Russia to intensify its military campaign.
Zelensky also reiterated his request for the United States to grant Ukraine licences to manufacture Patriot air defence missiles domestically as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its long-term defence capabilities.
