Nigerian filmmaker, actor, producer and director Oluchukwu Iheonunekwu, professionally known as Donald Iheonunekwu, has received international recognition for using film to confront cultural stereotypes and promote understanding across African societies.

His film, A Trip to Kigali, won Best Narrative Feature at the TAFF International Film Festival in Dallas, United States. The production also received the Best Actress 2026 award, strengthening its position as one of the standout entries at the festival.

Iheonunekwu said the film was inspired by a personal experience during his first visit to Rwanda, where he encountered stereotypes about young Igbo men shaped in part by portrayals in some Nollywood productions.

Rather than dismiss the experience, he transformed it into a story that challenges prejudice, encourages conversation and highlights the need for stronger cultural understanding.

Shot in Lagos and Kigali, A Trip to Kigali has attracted praise for its storytelling and cross cultural message. Iheonunekwu worked on the project as actor, co director and producer. The film was produced by MOBTV Studios and Onic Entertainment, with support from Nigerian American entertainment executive Joe Ugonna.

A native of Abia State, Iheonunekwu has built a reputation for films that celebrate African history, identity and culture. His documentary, Journey to Igbo Civilisation, won Best Documentary at the Abuja International Film Festival in 2022 and at VILLAFEST in 2023.

He said film can do more than entertain because it can challenge stereotypes, preserve culture and reshape global perceptions.

His latest recognition underlines Nollywood’s growing global relevance and the power of African cinema to correct misconceptions while telling authentic stories that connect with international audiences.
