Tinubu Orders Amendment of NYSC Act, Approves Sweeping Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministries of Youth Development and Justice to commence the process of amending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Act and its subsidiary regulations following the approval of far-reaching reforms by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The directive, announced after Monday’s FEC meeting, is aimed at repositioning the NYSC from a traditional mobilisation scheme into a modern platform focused on skills acquisition, employability and entrepreneurship.

In a post on his official X account, President Tinubu said the reforms would equip young Nigerians with practical skills and create greater opportunities for career development and enterprise.

Among the key reforms approved by the council are the extension of the NYSC orientation programme from three weeks to six weeks, the introduction of specialised career and vocational training, the adoption of technology-driven deployment of corps members, and enhanced security through risk-based postings.

According to the President, the reforms are designed to better prepare Nigerian youths for the world of work, encourage entrepreneurship, and strengthen their contribution to national development.

The Ministries of Youth Development and Justice are expected to begin drafting the necessary amendments to the NYSC Act to provide the legal framework for implementing the approved reforms.
