South Africa made history on Thursday by advancing to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey.
The decisive goal came in the second half through Thapelo Maseko, whose clinical finish proved enough to seal a landmark victory for Bafana Bafana.
Maseko found space inside the penalty area before shifting the ball onto his left foot and firing a low shot through the legs of defender Jens Castrop and inside the near post, sparking celebrations among South African supporters.
The victory lifted South Africa to second place in Group A behind Mexico and secured a place in the Round of 32, where they will face Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday.
South Korea controlled large portions of possession but struggled to convert their dominance into clear scoring opportunities. Their best chances fell to Oh Hyeon-gyu, whose header lacked power, and Lee Kang-in, who tested the South African defence early in the contest.
South Africa, however, appeared more threatening on the counterattack and created the better opportunities throughout the match. Their disciplined defensive organization and tactical execution ultimately earned them a deserved victory.
The result also extends the World Cup journey of South Africa head coach Hugo Broos, who has already announced that he intends to retire at the conclusion of the tournament.
South Africa’s qualification marks a significant milestone for the national team, which had not appeared at a World Cup since hosting the tournament in 2010. Prior to this campaign, the team had never progressed beyond the group stage, having finished third in each of its previous World Cup appearances.
For South Korea, hopes of progression remain alive, but the Asian side must now await the outcome of other group-stage matches to determine whether they can advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The historic victory represents a major achievement for South African football and sets up an intriguing knockout-stage clash against Canada as Bafana Bafana seek to continue their impressive World Cup run.
