Switzerland secured top spot in Group B of the FIFA World Cup after a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada, with both nations advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament.
After a subdued first half, Switzerland came out strongly after the break and took the lead just one minute into the second half. Ruben Vargas calmly finished from close range after being set up by Johan Manzambi.
The Swiss extended their advantage in the 57th minute when Breel Embolo held up play inside the penalty area before laying the ball off for Manzambi, who struck a powerful effort into the net to make it 2-0.
Canada responded in the 76th minute through substitute Promise David, who scored with his first touch after meeting a pass from Nathan Saliba, raising hopes of a late comeback for the hosts at a packed BC Place Stadium.
Backed by enthusiastic home support, Canada pressed for an equaliser, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced several crucial saves to preserve his side’s lead and secure all three points.
Speaking after the match, Vargas expressed delight with the result, praising his teammates for their determination throughout the contest.
The victory saw Switzerland finish the group stage with seven points, three ahead of second-placed Canada. A draw would have been enough for the Canadians to claim first place in the group.
Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their Round of 32 fixture, while Canada will travel to Los Angeles for their next match in the tournament.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch admitted disappointment at missing out on top spot but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to make an impact in the knockout rounds.
In the other Group B encounter, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 in Seattle to keep their qualification hopes alive while ending Qatar’s World Cup campaign.
The match also featured an emotional moment for Canada, as injured midfielder Ismael Kone, who is recovering from a broken leg sustained against Qatar, watched from the sidelines. Fans displayed banners bearing his number in a show of support, while Mark Carney was among the spectators in attendance.
With both Switzerland and Canada progressing, attention now turns to the knockout stage, where the two sides will seek to continue their World Cup journeys.
