Senate President Akpabio Swears In 4 New Members

The Senate on Wednesday officially inducted four new lawmakers following their victories in the recent bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, administered the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office to the newly elected senators during plenary.

The new senators are Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Rivers South East Senatorial District; Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Nasarawa North; Ikeje Asogwu of the APC, representing Enugu North; and Dayo Faduyile of the APC, representing Ondo South.

The vacancies that led to the bye-elections arose from different circumstances. The Rivers South East seat became vacant following the death of former Senator Barinada Mpigi, while the Nasarawa North seat was declared vacant after the death of Senator Godiya Akwaashiki.

In Enugu North, Asogwu emerged victorious to succeed the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea. Meanwhile, Faduyile won the Ondo South seat following the appointment of former senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, Akpabio congratulated the new senators and urged them to quickly acquaint themselves with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders to enable them discharge their legislative responsibilities effectively.

He emphasized the importance of understanding parliamentary procedures and legislative rules, noting that effective representation requires a thorough grasp of the Senate’s operations and constitutional mandates.

The induction of the four lawmakers brings fresh representation to their respective senatorial districts and strengthens the composition of the upper chamber as it continues deliberations on key national issues.
