Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the state’s resolve to confront climate change, noting that Lagos is larger than many countries in Africa and Europe.
Speaking at a roundtable at Guildhall, London, on “Financing State Determined Contributions: Connecting Climate Change Capital to Africa’s Most Investment Ready Cities,” Sanwo-Olu said the state’s size made it especially vulnerable to climate challenges.
“With 15 thousand metric tons of waste to contain, we can’t fold our arms and not take action. We have to make our city livable,” he said, adding that almost every European country was half the size of Lagos. He listed state initiatives including being the first subnational to issue a green bond, investment in the auto industry and installing solar lights. Dr. Adebola Odunsi told the session that Africa lacked not climate ambition but institutional mechanisms to convert commitments into investment ready projects. The governor later featured in a podcast at Chatham House
