Sanwo-Olu Holds Bilateral Talks at Chatham House, Highlights Nigeria’s Development Through Lagos Model

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday held a bilateral meeting with Tighisti Amare, Director of the Africa Programme at Chatham House, London, where discussions centred on Nigeria’s development trajectory, viewed through the Lagos experience.

The meeting formed part of the governor’s engagements at the renowned global policy institute, with both parties exchanging views on Nigeria’s economic, social, and political development.

Amare, speaking on behalf of Chatham House, expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for accepting the invitation to engage with the centre. She noted that the institution maintains a strong interest in Nigeria due to its strategic importance and influence on the African continent.

She also highlighted Chatham House’s focus on Nigeria’s development outlook, particularly its governance, economic growth, and political processes, with attention to the country’s preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu provided an overview of Nigeria’s socio-economic environment, drawing attention to ongoing reforms and developments across various sectors.

The governor referenced the recently concluded off-cycle governorship election in Ekiti State, describing it as peaceful, free, and fair. He said the election reflected Nigeria’s evolving democratic process, where political parties participate in elections without undue interference.

Sanwo-Olu urged international policy institutions such as Chatham House to adopt a more balanced perspective when analysing African nations, noting that every country and region has both strengths and challenges.

He emphasised that greater attention should be given to positive developments across the continent, particularly progress being made in governance, infrastructure, and democratic consolidation.

The engagement underscores ongoing efforts by Nigerian leaders to strengthen international dialogue on governance, economic development, and democratic processes.
