Egypt Beat New Zealand 3–1 for Historic First World Cup Win

Egypt recorded their first-ever victory at the World Cup on Sunday, defeating New Zealand 3–1 in a Group G encounter to boost their chances of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

The North African side came from behind after conceding an early goal to secure a memorable win, with Mohamed Salah among the scorers in a performance that electrified their travelling supporters.

New Zealand took the lead in the 15th minute through Finn Surman, who rose highest to head home and silence the Egyptian fans inside the stadium.

However, Egypt responded before halftime when Mostafa Zico powered in an equaliser, heading in a cross from Mohamed Hany to restore parity.

The turnaround was completed in the second half, with Salah combining sharply in attack before curling home a left-footed strike in the 67th minute to give Egypt the lead.

Salah later turned provider, assisting substitute Trezeguet for the third goal, as the forward guided in a low header to seal the victory.

Speaking after the match, Salah described the win as a historic moment for Egyptian football.

“In years to come we will remember that this was one of the achievements in history,” he said, adding that the presence of Egyptian supporters made the atmosphere feel like a home fixture.

The result places Egypt at the top of Group G with four points, leaving them needing just a draw against Iran in their final group match in Seattle to secure a place in the round of 32.

Earlier in the group, Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw, leaving the group finely balanced ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Egypt now sit in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stage, with momentum firmly on their side after a landmark World Cup victory.
