USA Advance to World Cup Knockout Stage as Brazil Eliminate Haiti

The United States secured a place in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup on Friday after a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia, while Brazil regained form with a dominant win over Haiti to keep their campaign on track.

USA Cruise Past Australia

Playing in Seattle, the United States delivered a clinical performance to defeat Australia in their Group D encounter. The hosts took an early lead in the 11th minute after Australian defender Cameron Burgess turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side doubled their advantage just before half-time, with Alex Freeman heading home to seal a comfortable victory.

The result ensured the Americans progressed to the round of 32 with a game to spare, continuing an impressive start to the tournament following their 4-1 win over Paraguay in their opening fixture.

“It was a fantastic game again, very good first half,” Pochettino said after the match. “I think we dominated the game against a very tough team.”

The United States’ qualification was further confirmed later in the day when Paraguay defeated Turkey 1-0, guaranteeing the co-hosts top spot in Group D and a potentially easier draw in the next round.

Paraguay Stay Alive, Turkey Eliminated

Paraguay’s narrow victory over Turkey in Santa Clara kept their hopes of qualification alive while ending Turkey’s campaign.

Matias Galarza scored the decisive goal just 63 seconds into the match. However, the game also produced a historic moment as Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron became the first player sent off under FIFA’s new rule banning players from covering their mouths during confrontations.

Almiron received a red card in first-half stoppage time after appearing to address Turkey’s Mert Müldür while shielding his mouth, a move FIFA has outlawed as part of efforts to combat abusive behaviour.

Brazil Dominate Haiti

Elsewhere, Brazil produced a commanding performance to defeat Haiti 3-0 in Group C, ending the Caribbean side’s hopes of advancing.

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha scored twice, while Vinicius Junior added a third to seal a one-sided victory at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Despite the win, Brazil suffered an injury scare when winger Raphinha was forced off in the 40th minute following a collision with Haiti defender Martin Experience. Coach Carlo Ancelotti said he had no immediate update on the player’s condition.

“It was a complete match, much better in the first half,” Ancelotti said. “Better quality, fewer mistakes, more effectiveness in attack and more control at the back.”

Brazil now sit level on four points with Morocco atop Group C but lead on goal difference.

Morocco Edge Scotland

Morocco boosted their chances of advancing with a 1-0 victory over Scotland in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Ismael Saibari scored the only goal of the game in just the second minute, firing home a powerful strike to give the North Africans an early advantage they held onto.

The result leaves Scotland needing a strong performance in their final group match against Brazil to keep their hopes alive.

“We will need to be at our best,” Scotland midfielder John McGinn said. “Brazil will be a different game — they have quality that can hurt you at any point.”

Group Stage Heats Up

With the group stage entering its decisive phase, several teams have already secured progression, while others face must-win final matches.

The United States will look to maintain their unbeaten run, while Brazil and Morocco are set for a tight battle for supremacy in Group C as the road to the knockout rounds intensifies.
