Deputy Senate President Gives Works Ministry Ultimatum to Review Contractor on N56 Billion Kano Road Project

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has formally written to the Minister of Works demanding an immediate assessment of the contractor executing the Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Road project, saying the failure to make satisfactory progress on a strategic highway despite combined budgetary allocations of N56 billion across the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts was causing unacceptable hardship to commuters and economic actors across three northern states.

In a letter addressed to Works Minister Dave Umahi, Barau said the approximately 100-kilometre route from Kano through Gwarzo to Dayi was critical to connectivity, agricultural produce movement, and economic activity across Kano, Katsina, and Kebbi states, and that the contractor’s persistent inability to meet expected project milestones despite the scale of funding made intervention by the ministry a matter of public interest.

The Deputy Senate President noted that the ministry had acknowledged receipt of his letter earlier in the month and called for concrete action including a contractor performance review and the taking of whatever steps were necessary to bring the project back on track. He said continued delays on a road that linked agricultural and commercial communities across a major economic corridor were not merely an inconvenience but a drag on the broader regional economy that depended on movement along the route.

The Federal Ministry of Works had not publicly responded to the concerns at the time of reporting.
