Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, restating its support for multilateralism, global peace, international cooperation and ongoing reforms of the global body ahead of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The commitment was formally endorsed on Wednesday in New York by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, who signed the declaration on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ambassador Ibrahim said Nigeria remains firmly committed to strengthening the United Nations system and promoting a rules-based international order that supports peace, stability and sustainable development globally.
He noted that Nigeria’s position reflects both its domestic priorities and its longstanding engagement in global peace and security efforts, while aligning with the UN80 reform agenda aimed at improving the efficiency and responsiveness of the organisation.
Nigeria’s renewed pledge comes at a time when the United Nations is intensifying efforts to reform its institutions amid rising geopolitical tensions, conflicts, humanitarian crises, climate challenges and growing demands for more inclusive global governance.
The UN80 initiative seeks to modernise the organisation, strengthen accountability and improve its capacity to respond to emerging global threats, including terrorism, cyber insecurity, migration pressures and widening development gaps.
Nigeria, which joined the United Nations on October 7, 1960, has remained one of Africa’s most active contributors to UN peacekeeping operations and multilateral diplomacy. The country has participated in missions across Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others, and has consistently advocated for reform of the UN Security Council to include permanent African representation.
Diplomatic observers say Nigeria’s latest reaffirmation underscores its ambition to maintain a leading role in global decision-making and amplify Africa’s voice within the international system.
Ambassador Ibrahim also serves as Chairman of the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly, which oversees administrative and budgetary matters of the organisation.
