President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the development as shocking and extended his condolences to the late military officer’s family, the government of Katsina State, and the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The President noted that General Abubakar, who had a distinguished military career before retiring from service, was travelling to his hometown when he was abducted by armed criminals.
Tinubu also expressed concern over the continued captivity of the late general’s wife, who remains in the custody of the kidnappers, and sympathised with the family during the difficult period.
Reaffirming his administration’s stance against terrorism and kidnapping, the President declared that the Federal Government would not yield to demands by terrorist groups seeking the release of their members currently detained by security agencies.
He reiterated his earlier warning to bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terrorism to surrender or face decisive action from the Nigerian state.
According to the President, the government remains committed to defeating criminal groups threatening the country’s security and stability.
Tinubu said the death of the retired military officer should serve as a rallying point in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency, stressing that terrorist groups must continue to be treated as enemies of the nation.
He maintained that Nigeria would ultimately overcome the security challenges confronting the country and continue its pursuit of peace, stability and national development.
The President further urged Nigerians to remain united and resolute in the face of security threats, expressing confidence that those responsible for acts of terrorism and violence would eventually be defeated.
General Abubakar’s death has drawn widespread reactions across the country, with many describing it as a tragic loss given his years of service to the nation and contributions to national security.
